Happy Monday

Happy Monday
to you all.

Jon just said that he’d like to push the Saturday button. If only, right?

I think that we need some music for our Monday.

First up, my boy JLB. Many of you may have seen this on his blog, Wacktopia. I think that this is his best singing effort, so far, but I’m a mother and am therefore not anything approaching objective.

Then, for you garage rock fans, there is this song by Band of Skulls called Light of the Morning.

You may have caught this in the Ford Mustang commercial. I like it — there’s a retro rock feel that is nice.

A free mp3 can be found at Indie Rock Cafe.

The last music suggestion for your Monday comes from a Swedish sister duo called First Aid Kit. The song is Hard Believer. These girls can sing. This is acoustic and has a alt. folk/country sound to me. (Theologically speaking, I completely disagree with the second verse, by the way, but if I had to agree 100 percent with the lyrics of every song on my list then I’d have far fewer songs to listen to.) I really would like to hear more from this album. I’d bet that it is great because this song is stunning.

A free mp3 of Hard Believer can be found here, at HearYa.

I’m off to take my Monday by the horns.

Saturday, Again?

Saturday, Again?

How can it already be Saturday?

Today there shall be pumpkin bread and maybe some brioche. Or maybe I’ll try to bake my first ciabatta. We’ll see.

I’d like to go apple picking sometime soon. Do y’all have any favorite orchards to go to around here?

Oh, also, J put up another song on his blog. It is a good one even though he is still doing SchoolHouse Rock for some reason. At least he’s not singing about numbers today. Thanks to all of you who have been so kind to visit his blog and leave comments. I appreciate it.

Have a good one, y’all!

Music All Around

Music All Around

This post has been a while in coming. Sorry for that, but I went to this concert on August 16th and then school ensued.

Y’all may remember that I wrote A.A. Bondy a letter on this blog and basically made a case (begged) him to come to St. Louis. Then my friend Anne said that we should go see him in Columbia. So we went and asked our friend Lori to come, too.

So that was lots of fun. I got to talk to those two great gals all the way to Columbia. We drank some fine beer and then saw A.A. Bondy.

The concert was fun, college hadn’t yet started term and so the crowd was light. But the really great part came at the end. After the encore when the band came back to the stage Anne and I went to the front. Now, I had previously told Anne that I wished that A.A. Bondy would sing “I’m So Lonesome” by Hank Williams. I had seen him cover the song online and I really wanted to hear him do it in person. He started playing around on his guitar, about to start the first encore song, when Anne yelled, “HANK WILLIAMS!!” He looked up with half a smile and said, “Hey, I love Hank Williams.” Then he and his band went on to sing two other songs. After that, to his band’s surprise, he told them that they could go and that he was going to close with Hank.

I took this video with my little camera. I think it did a good job. The only problem is that it only takes video in 3 minute clips. So the last little bit of the song is missing. Oh, and the giddy giggling that is happening at the beginning was done by me.

Other music today can be found on J’s blog, Wacktopia. This is not his best effort. It was taken after we had done a bunch of takes, the camera was running out of battery life AND he had a case of the giggles and had already sung the song in Swedish just to keep things interesting for me. So, click on over, if you dare.

Happy Friday!

Another Excellent Sandwich

Another Excellent Sandwich
can be found here.

This recipe is from Three Many Cooks which is one of my favorite cooking blogs. Of course, I tweaked the recipe to suit my likes/dislikes. I made these a couple of weekends ago while my parents were visiting and we all really enjoyed them. Here’s my version:

Meatless Muffalettas

2 or so cloves garlic
1/4 cup capers
1 cup black olives
1 cup pimento-stuffed green olives
2 T. red wine vinegar
2 t. dried oregano
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Mince the garlic and then capers in a food processor. Add the remaining ingredients and pulse to chop it up. This can be stored in the fridge for several weeks.

When you’re ready to assemble the sandwiches take the bread of your choice (even hoagie rolls will do– this from the bread snob known as Annie) and spread one side with olive salad. Top this with a couple of different cheeses (I used pepper jack and provolone — I think that sliced mozzarella would be good and I really would love to try it with fresh mozzarella, also). You should also add some quartered artichoke hearts and some red onion (if you like it). At this point you could go ahead and eat the sandwich but I suggest that you grill it in some olive oil.

Wonderful.

Happy Thursday and last day of September (sniff) to y’all.
