Well, I was going to post about the funky orange chair that Jon got for super cheap…but I’m too tired to describe anything very well right now. My poor boys. Last night at 10, both my oldest and youngest started complaining about their ears. The youngest has been to the Dr. this morning and, surprise (not), he has an ear infection and he is wheezing. The oldest has an appointment this afternoon. I’m certain that he has an ear infection, too. So, last night was more sleepless than usual in the Barlow apartment. Thankfully, my children have grown up in these close quarters and somehow manage to sleep through their brother crying in the adjacent bed or screaming in the living room that is around the corner. I really notice the size of the apartment when one of the boys is sick. It seems like there is suddenly not enough space. Oh well. I’m just glad that I live in the age of advil and antibiotics and tubes put in the ears by ENTs. Y’all have a good day.

Well, this week will be interesting. It has definitely started off that way. Jon has 3 of his written comps this week and one next Monday. Hopefully, all will go well. My grandmother passed away last week. It is hard to be sad about her passing, even though we will miss her, because of her failing health. She would have been 97 in October. Of those 96 and a half years, I think that she really enjoyed about 90 of them. She had a good life. What a hoot that lady was. You never wondered where you stood with her. She always informed you. I personally ALWAYS wore my long hair up in a bun when visiting her. She had opinions about hair and just about everything else. She made the best banana pudding and the best green beans that I have ever had. And, I will always think of her when I smell really sweet bananas. She was a really hard worker. When I think about my grandmother’s life and about all that she did and endured — even though she had a good life — I am really humbled, in a way, because I just don’t feel like I’m made of such sturdy material, myself. I know that my grandmother, at the age of 31 (my age) could have wiped the floor with me. And when I think about the work that she daily did — it just astounds me. But every farmer’s wife of the early and mid 20th century did that much work. They all just worked so hard. Maybe that should be an inspiration for me. Mama Smith, you were a true original and I will miss you.

Free Scoop Day is tomorrow at Ben and Jerry’s stores. I know that the Ben and Jerry’s stores on the Loop and in the Central West End are participating here in St. Louis. So, swing by and get some! And, if you think getting free Ben and Jerry’s isn’t exciting….well, I don’t like telling folks that they might be crazy….but…..(just kidding).

The baby is constantly surprising us with the new things that he is learning, doing and saying. He started climbing this week…so that makes life so very exciting for all of us. It will be good when he can climb down as well as he can climb up. He has also been expressing his um, preferences, much more lately. Ah…we knew that it had to happen sooner or later. And, like his brothers, he seems to love (toy) weapons. The other day, he brought me one of their little retractable toy light sabers, and said, very distinctly, “Guzsch!” Or, to translate, “Please open this thing up for me, Mom.” So I opened it for him, and he promptly joined the battle that was being waged in the living room. Little boys — I love them.
