Morning Announcement

Morning Announcement
E stumbles into the kitchen this morning. He has slept late and it is 7:30. He looks up at me, and while rubbing his eyes, emphatically says, “Mommy, I been sweepen and sweepen and I JUST CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!”

You know, for some reason, the sleeping part of my life is the easiest part to take. Perhaps that is the where the 30 year gap in our ages shows up.

Boring Dreams

Boring Dreams
I’ve been having weird dreams lately. And, what makes them so weird is not that they are about trucks falling from the sky or growing watermelons that are covered with green shag carpet but that they are so boring and mundane. This seems to be the case with E, my youngest son, too. Yesterday morning, he informed me, as he lay on the floor in the kitchen (morning is sometimes too much, you know) that he dreamed that our houseplants needed some water. That is like dreaming about going to the post office, or something. I had had a boring dream that night as well. In my dream, I was putting on foundation makeup. It was really wild because I could see the brand name and color and everything. And, since I don’t wear any in real life, I was wondering what this whole thing was about when I woke up. Of course, since E’s dream is true and the houseplants do need watering — maybe I should assume that it is time for me to start wearing makeup. I’m sure my self-improvement-minded friend, Eliza, would say, “Yes, this is totally a sign. Go with it, girl!” It’s a good thing that she doesn’t read my blog, or I’d be getting a phone call to that end.

The houseplants will be watered and maybe I’ll think about the makeup thing. But, you know, water is basically free and makeup takes time and money. So I don’t think the prospects of my wearing it are too favorable.

Weekend Recap/What Were You Thinking, PBS?

Weekend Recap/What Were You Thinking, PBS?

And how was everybody’s weekend? It’s been kind of crazy ’round here. Despite the unusual stuff going on, I did manage to read and see some stuff lately. Last week, I reread Danny, Champion of the World (one of my favorite Roald Dahl books) and also read The Old Man and the Sea for the first time. Don’t know how I missed it before. I really enjoyed reading it. Hemingway’s writing reminds me of Cormac McCarthy’s for some reason. But I’m not sure that I could say why.

Jon and I watched the movie, Once on Friday night. I really liked it. I have never seen a movie that had so many complete songs in it. This movie is all about music. The music in the movie is actually the sort that I rarely listen to. I like music that kind of drives along instead of moseying. When I listen to slow, thoughtful music I usually find myself wishing that the musicians would just kick it in and get the drums going. And, the whole reason that I’m saying all of my preferences about music is to say that I liked the songs in Once a lot. The story was great, too. It was sweet and real. And, if you don’t trust me, then go see what Jandy had to say about it.

So those were the winners of the weekend. The loser was the adaptation of Persuasion that aired last night on PBS. I’m actually struggling to find something good to say about this program. Really. I suppose that Captain Wentworth is sort of cute….does that count? I really love the book, Persuasion. I’ve read it a few times and I’ve also seen the adaptation done in 1995. And, in my opinion, the Persuasion that aired last night was very inferior compared with the 1995 version. I won’t even compare it to the book. It was terrible in every way. And, look, I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Just check here, here, or here.

Please don’t waste your time with this one.

Wow, This is Pretty Exciting

Wow, This is Pretty Exciting
Last night, I was poking around on IMDB hoping to catch a glimpse of the actress who is playing Narcissa Malfoy when I saw this. It appears that PBS is launching a new thing called Masterpiece, The Complete Jane Austen. This will include adaptations of all of her novels (four new ones!) and a new drama based on her life. It all starts on January 13th. Hop over there and check it out!
