For Those With Sandpaper Hands

For Those With Sandpaper Hands
I have dry skin. Let me say that again, I have DRY, DRY, DRY skin. Especially on my hands. I feel like I’ve tried everything: scrubs, creams, going to sleep with cotton gloves. Nothing lasts beyond about 2 handwashings. And, the thing that I don’t like about it, besides the actual discomfort and asthetic problem, is that people in general think that you don’t care what your hands look like. That isn’t the case with me. I do care and they look terrible, anyway. Now, I have found something that really, truly helps. It is this product. They carry it at Trader Joe’s here in St. Louis and I think that it is like, $5.50 or something. It smells really great and keeps my hands smooth and from looking like the skin on the feet of a bird of prey for at least a few hours. The first night I bought it, I put it on and got Jon to touch my hands. He said, “Oh, they feel like the hands of a girl.” And then he said, “Just kidding!” at the exact same time as I said, “I’m blogging that!” So there you have it.

  1. I’m with you in the DRY skin area! I’ll have to hunt for that lotion down here. However, I have found the new Gold Bond lotion is quite divine too and not greasy.

  2. Protopic ointment is good (prescription) and cutemol …I have the same issue with my hands and my forehead does a strange flakey thing too. Getting some snow today???

  3. Oooooh Annie, us too. Maybe it’s a fair skinned thing???? Clay especially suffers from dry skin. Maybe it’s a red-head thing???? We have tried everything too. So far the cheapest and Clay’s favorite is Curel, I don’t like it. Next time I’m in TJ’s I’ll try your suggestion.

  4. I feel your pain. Will try that stuff next time I go to TJ’s. I use the Midsummer Night’s Cream but it is only good on my other skin areas. My hands are mealy and horrid; I hate them. I have the ugliest hands I have ever encountered. It does not help that I have severe eczema and they crack and bleed just about every day.

  5. This is one of my daily struggles. I’ll have to try to find that lotion. I love your description “the skin on the feet of a bird of prey”-that is the perfect comparison, and it’s hilarious!

  6. My skin’s been really dry since I moved to Ohio. It’s especially disgusting when the skin in between my fingers or on my ears starts to flake off. I thought it was because I inherited my Dad’s vitiligo. Maybe it is a fair skinned thing. Maybe it’s being used to more humid weather. Maybe it’s because we have to keep the heat on so much here. I don’t know.

I have not tried the product you mentioned from Trader Joe’s. I’ll have to try it. I like using Cetaphil. It’s in the same price range and you can get it at Kroger or Giant Eagle.

By the way, do you think it’s ok to use Vaseline? I’ve heard conflicting opinions. One of my coworkers swears by it, but Louis says the petroleum actually dries out the skin.

  7. Hey Weez,
I don’t know about Vaseline. It tends to work on other dry skin on me (like elbows, knees) better than lotion. And, this lotion from TJs is not a cure all — but it does help with the scratchy feeling. I mean, my hands were so dry that I dreaded folding the laundry. I’d go with Deana if you need some great lotion ideas — she is *the* great lotion sleuth.

Hope that y’all are doing fine in OH. We have it here and I think that I’ve had enough. Of course, this means that we’ll probably have snow on Easter this year. 🙂

  8. I was talking about snow in the above post to my friend, Weez, who lives in Ohio. This proves, yet again, that I don’t need to try to string sentences together after 8 p.m. It rarely works out very well.

    Happy Friday, everybody!

  9. Is this product at walmart?

  10. I don’t think that it is. It isn’t at my wal-mart, anyway. But, it is at Kroger! 🙂 I think that it’s a good product. There is a great hand lotion from Aveda that I really like, too. It’s called Hand Relief. It is here: http://www.aveda.com/product/5205/16410/Body/Moisturize/index.tmpl.

  11. I too have severe dry skin! Desperate to find something that will cure the sandpaper feel of my hands! The posts previous to mine are from 2007. Anybody out there now with the same problem? Sandpaper hands?

  12. What is the name of the product from Trader Joe’s

  13. Well..I’ve heard it all..my hands and feet looks like I am 70 years old..I was born with wrinkled hands and feet and it can be very embarrassing for me..I have a faddish with pretty feet..I always have to wear closed up shoes..Is there anything out there that can help me..
