Night Journey

Night Journey

is a lovely poem by Theodore Roethke. I was introduced to the poem by my 2nd son, N, who was assigned to memorize it for school. Here it is:

Night Journey

Now as the train bears west,
Its rhythm rocks the earth,
And from my Pullman berth
I stare into the night
While others take their rest.
Bridges of iron lace,
A suddenness of trees,
A lap of mountain mist
All cross my line of sight,
Then a bleak wasted place,
And a lake below my knees.
Full on my neck I feel
The straining at a curve;
My muscles move with steel,
I wake in every nerve.
I watch a beacon swing
From dark to blazing bright;
We thunder through ravines
And gullies washed with light.
Beyond the mountain pass
Mist deepens on the pane;
We rush into a rain
That rattles double glass.
Wheels shake the roadbed stone,
The pistons jerk and shove,
I stay up half the night
To see the land I love.

Here’s my boy reciting it last night at the Spring Expo at his school. I’m so proud of him.

Happy Wednesday, y’all!

Baked Bean Dreams

Baked Bean Dreams

are what I had last night. I had this dream that I was cooking baked beans, my alarm clock would ring (in my crazy dream state I thought it was my kitchen timer) I would turn it off, and the whole crazy dream would start over again. As a result, I woke up 45 minutes later than usual and proceeded to a kitchen that had precious little free counter space for me to make sack lunches and breakfast.

I guess having baked bean dreams and a disaster of a house is a small price to pay for our feast turning out so well. It was organized chaos, to be sure, since we had almost a hundred extra people turn up, but it was also great. We were bursting at the seams last night and we couldn’t have been happier about it. You know how I said I sincerely hoped that all of the chairs in the gym would be filled? Well, they were, and then some. We did not run out of food, YAY! We also didn’t run out of sanity, because we had some of the best folks who came from sister churches to help keep the whole thing going.

What a blast! What a blessing.

Okay, I’m going to scoot because my laundry pile is truly scary and I’ve got miles to go still putting this house back together.

I hope y’all have had a great Monday!

Saturday’s Work

Saturday’s Work

So, here I am in the aged gym turned dining hall for our feast following the Particularization Service.

Can I just say that the people in my church are amazing. Herculean efforts are no problem for them.

I sincerely hope that every single chair is filled.

Happy Sunday, y’all!
