Well, I got most of my spring break goals accomplished. Still have to go through the clothes and gather stuff for the rummage sale. Still have to get Easter duds. Still have to paint my bathroom. Still have to help my neighbor shop for a rocker recliner. Still have lots of cooking to do. But all of that is fun stuff. I saved the fun stuff for last.

Funny things the five year old has done lately:

This is the boy who draws dozens of drawings in a sitting. He does the sound effects that go along with what he is drawing, too. For instance, the other day, he was drawing a series of pictures of a dog chasing a cat. In each drawing, the dog was getting closer and closer to the cat, the cat was getting more terrified, and the dog’s jaws and teeth were getting bigger and bigger. The whole time he was drawing the pictures, he was growling and doing the dialogue of the animals. The last picture in the series was just an up-close shot of the dog’s open mouth complete with the “swallow hole” — as he calls it. I thought that I wouldn’t be able to contain myself…that growling was hilarious.

Then, the other day, the boys were watching “The Incredibles” with us. In the scene when Helen is flying the plane, I said something like, “Wow, don’t they have a cool Mom? She can fly a jet.” My 5 year old responded by saying (like it was nothing special), “Oh, you could do that.” I’m glad that he thinks so.

He looked up from his drawing one day to say, “Mom, we need more caple.” What? “Son, could you say that again, I didn’t understand you.” C, again, “Mom, we need to get more caple. We don’t have enough. You know, Miss Liz has lots and LOTS of caple.” I said, “Oh, you mean cable. Like cable TV? Right?” He replied, “Uh-huh.” That boy.

Sorry for the blog absence. This is spring break for my boys. We are staying in town and I have a long list of stuff that I want to get done over the break. Some of the stuff has already been done. I slayed the beast that was the big boys room. Now, their closets and toys and books are organized and orderly. It used to be my least favorite room in the apartment. So I figured that I should start there. The remaining goals for the week include taming the paper monster on my kitchen counter (the 5 year old has drawn a 10 inch stack of papers over the last 3 weeks!!), hanging a magnetic strip that holds knives in the kitchen, making spaghetti sauce to freeze for later, gathering stuff for the school’s upcoming rummage sale, and getting all the boy’s clothes organized. If I get all that done, I’ll permit myself to go shopping for Easter clothes for the boys and (hopefully!) get my bathroom painted. So, I’ll go and see what I can get done right now. Have a happy week, everyone!

My baby wanted to eat his finger food with a fork today. He is so determined — determined but sweet. He was so happy to try feeding himself with a fork. Cute. He is also in the habit of pointing to something with the hopes that someone will tell him what he is pointing at. So, at lunch today, I was eating an apple and he pointed to it. “Apple,” I told him, and he said “abbl”. He is growing up so fast and learning so much. I had sort of forgotten what this stage of babyhood is like. My dear neighbor, Miss Liz, is so good to us. Today, she came back from the store bearing a quiche, a carton of blackberries and 2 boxes of shortbread for us. She is too nice. I think that I’m going to go try some of the blackberries now. Meanwhile, I think that I’m going crazy. Today, I was on my way to get our 3rd son from pre-k when I realized that I had missed the exit. (Keep in mind that I drive this route many times a day, many days a year.) Not only had I missed the exit, but I found myself lost in thought — about nothing in particular — when I suddenly started wondering…where am I supposed to be going???? Crazy. But do you know the craziest thing of all? I don’t want any chocolate today. How crazy is that? I am a chocolate hog. I think that this is the first day in my life that I haven’t cared whether or not I got a little bite of chocolate to eat. I mean, forgetting where you are going in a car is one thing…but not wanting any chocolate…that is really serious. Oh well. I’m sure that I’m on my way to the looney bin. Y’all can all say that you knew me when. Have a great weekend.

A Lenten Prayer Lord, who throughout these forty days For us did fast and pray, Teach us with you to mourn our sins, And close by you to stay. As you with Satan did contend And did the vict’ry win, O give us strength in you to fight, In you to conquer sin. As you did hunger and did thirst, So teach us, gracious Lord, To die to self and so to live By your most Holy Word. Abide with us, that through this life Of suff’ring and of pain An Easter of unending joy We may at last attain. (We sing this every week during Lent at our church. Anybody know the source?)

A Lenten Prayer

Lord, who throughout these forty days
For us did fast and pray,
Teach us with you to mourn our sins,
And close by you to stay.

As you with Satan did contend
And did the vict’ry win,
O give us strength in you to fight,
In you to conquer sin.

As you did hunger and did thirst,
So teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self and so to live
By your most Holy Word.

Abide with us, that through this life
Of suff’ring and of pain
An Easter of unending joy
We may at last attain.
