He’s Definitely on the Mend

He’s Definitely on the Mend
Yesterday, E was well enough to go outside for a little while. He didn’t want to come back inside, in fact. But, he was coughing and obviously getting tired, so I made him come. Then I decided that it might be a good idea for him to take a bath. He loves taking a bath and I thought that he could get clean and be happy instead being angry about having to come in. I had his responsible older brother watch him in the bathtub as I made lunch for all the boys. Then, as I was calling his brothers to lunch and making my way to the bathroom to oversee the last part of his bath, I heard a huge splash. When I got to the bathroom I saw him sitting in the churning water with a big smile on his face.

Me: E, did you just jump into the bathtub? You know that Mommy doesn’t let you jump or stand in the bathtub. What did you do?
E: I didn’t jump.
Me: You didn’t? I heard a big splash.
(pause)
E: Piggies like to jump in their baths.
Me: Oh, piggies like to jump in their baths. Really?!
E: (nodding his head) Oink, oink. Oink. Oink, oink, oink!

He proceeded to oink and gesticulate instead of speaking words for like 15 minutes. I guess that he thought that keeping up the act was instrumental in my not figuring out that he is actually not a pig and therefore not allowed to jump in the bathtub.

That boy is too much.

Happy Friday

Happy Friday
I’m more happy than usual on this particular Friday. Why? Well, my 3 year old has been sick this week. He has been fighting pneumonia. This is, hands down, the scariest illness that any of my boys have ever had. But he is quite a bit better now — I’m not watching his every breath anymore — although I did sleep on the floor by his bed last night, just in case. So, he is slowly convalescing and I’m wondering where the week went even though I was actually awake for more of it that usual. The last 4 days have been a whirl of phone conversations with medical folks, giving medicine and breathing treatments, crazy sleeplessness, worrying and Veronica Mars (season 1). We are blessed that he is doing better.

So, I didn’t do many of the things that I mentioned last week. Hopefully, I’ll be sharing about that stuff next week. Until then, you should really try this recipe for this apple spice cake. When I make one today it will be the third time this week that I’ve made it. It comes from Martha Stewart Living. It is easy (you might even have everything you need to make it in your kitchen right now) and completely addictive.

Have a great weekend.

If You Need a Doughnut….

If You Need a Doughnut….
then you need to get to a Lamars. Their doughnuts are REALLY yummy. Yesterday we stopped there prior to going for a quick Trader Joe’s run before our morning appointment at the pediatrician. So, we were standing there and I was trying to get E to tell me what he would like to have, when, in the midst of a fit of coughing, he threw up all over the floor. Now, I have to say that I was shocked. This was the first time in his almost 4 years that he has been sick like that. I apologized profusely and offered to clean up. They told me that they would take care of it and the manager told me that he hoped that E would feel better soon. After promising them that I’d come back soon to buy some doughnuts, we left. (I should mention that I’ve never been so happy to be the only customer in a store as I was then. Some things are just easier to take if the audience is small, you know?) I took E out to the van and was strapping him in when I noticed the manager had followed me out to the parking lot. He had brought a bottle of Sprite and a bottle of water with him and insisted on me taking one of them with me. And he wouldn’t let me pay him, either. Needless to say, I’m going to be telling Lamar’s corporate what a great employee they have at that particular location. You don’t get service like that everyday. You know, little acts of kindness aren’t really so little, when you think about it.
