My Thoughts On Adam

My Thoughts On Adam

I know I said that I’d probably be gone here until Tuesday, at least, but I went to a movie the other night and I feel like I should say what I thought about it.

Not that you should take my word for it.

Because I’m not a movie critic.

And of all movies, this one is not one that I’m going to be able to be objective about. This movie is about a man with Asperger’s Syndrome. So, if you know my little family, then you know that we’re about hip deep into the Autism spectrum and therefore I must repeat the total lack of my objectivity here.

Because objectivity just isn’t going to happen.

So, here we go.

If I had to categorize the movie, I would say that it is a nice little romantic movie. The way that they shot New York made it look fantastic and the dialogue was well-written.

I liked it.

Hugh Dancy, the actor who plays Adam, did an admirable job in his portrayal of a man who has Asperger’s. He didn’t hit any bad notes there, as far as I’m concerned, and, let me tell you, I was looking. The other acting in the film was good, too. I especially liked Rose Byrne’s character, Beth, and the friend of Adam’s father, Harlan. I probably paid more attention to those characters because they were in close contact with Adam. Harlan, especially, seemed to “get” or “not get” Adam so perfectly depending on what was going on in the scene. Truly, his expressions of frustration mixed with exasperation topped off with humor were priceless and dead on.

Now, I don’t know if this will be for Hugh Dancy what Rainman was for Dustin Hoffman. Maybe it will. And I don’t know how it will be received by the Aspie community.

But I do think that it illustrated well the life of some one with Asperger’s. About the trials that are faced on top of all of the other trials that we all have….life, death, taxes, love when it works out, work, looking for employment, love when it doesn’t work out, having enough money, not wanting to move, having to move, friendship, telling the truth, and trying to just make it all come together into a neat little package that we call life.

But life is so rarely a neat little package. Life is messy, y’all.

When you have Asperger’s, well, life is sometimes a little messier.

But then life is beautiful, too.

And this film shows that.

My 2 cents.

Because Pioneer Woman Did It…

Because Pioneer Woman Did It…

Isn’t that supposed to be the worst reason for doing something — because someone else did? But, since it will enable me to move the wedding photos down the page and make me feel a sense of accomplishment I will post my

eye. Typically, Pioneer Woman’s eye — like everything else about her — is much more interesting than mine.

My youngest son just loves the veins that he can see in my eyes. He has told me that he looks forward to having them in his own eyes someday. He was also looking forward to getting mammary glands but I had to inform him otherwise. He took it well. He consoled himself with the anticipation of someday getting tracks (wrinkles) where he scrunches up his nose. He is interesting.

Sorry to have been absent here for a week. I have had lots of things to talk about but I’m still framing it all up. Additionally, I’ve had the problem of being mostly horizontal instead of vertical for the past week and that will always pose a problem with getting stuff done. You know?

Seems that I must have been hit with a virus/infection combination that pretty much knocked me flat. And it shattered my record for sick visits to the doctor unrelated to pregnancy. Do you want to know the last time I went to the doctor before last Sunday when I finally broke down and skedaddled over there? Well, I’ll tell you that it was in Mississippi. So, you know, 13 years, give or take. I suppose that all records must be broken, eventually.

In other news, it has come to pass that all of the boys will start school on Tuesday. Until then I might be confused for a chicken with her head cut off and so I’ll probably catch up with y’all after that.

Until next Tuesday.

Has It Really Been 14 Years?

Has It Really Been 14 Years?

Crazy, that thing called time.

And, for the record, I would like to go back in time and counsel this girl about her eyebrows. But that is neither here nor there.

I’m thinking…

I’m thinking…
that I love going to Alabama.

I’m thinking that I consumed several thousand too many calories whilst there.

I’m thinking (hoping) that it’ll all even out.

I’m thinking that returning from a week of being away that was preceeded by a week of VBS can make me feel a little frantic about the next month.

I’m thinking that if time goes by any faster I’m going to get whiplash.

I’m thinking that reading a mystery into the wee hours of the night shows what a dummy I am.

I’m thinking that I’ve reached the age where I cannot miss hours of sleep with impunity.

I’m thinking that the years when I could do that might be over.

I’m thinking that the pico de gallo that I made tonight was scrumptious.

I’m thinking that I probably should have stopped eating it when my lips became numb — but what would the point of that have been?

I’m thinking about making it again soon….Thursday at the latest.

I’m thinking about giving y’all the recipe.

So here it is:

Pico de Gallo

5 seeded and chopped jalepeno chilis
5 medium plum tomatoes, chopped
1 small yellow onion, chopped
one bunch of cilantro, chopped
about 1/2 t. salt (or to taste)
lime juice (I used half of a large juicy lime)

Put together in a bowl and mix it up gently. Devour.

*Please watch out for those peppers while you are chopping. I used a mini chopper so that I wouldn’t have to touch them. You want the burn in your mouth and not on your fingers, right?
