{"id":694,"date":"2008-03-09T15:26:01","date_gmt":"2008-03-09T15:26:01","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-07-16T11:17:28","modified_gmt":"2011-07-16T11:17:28","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.annbarlow.com\/?p=694","title":{"rendered":"The Men of Austen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The Men of Austen<\/b><br \/>\nWhile perusing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/masterpiece\/\">Masterpiece\/PBS<\/a> site, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/masterpiece\/austen\/menofausten.html\">this<\/a> page about the men of Jane Austen&#8217;s novels.  You need to click &#8220;see the men&#8221; and then scroll over each photograph to get the details on each.  It isn&#8217;t totally correct, I&#8217;m sure, but it does tell us a little about each man and (this was the interesting part for me) translates the amount of money then &#8212; however many pounds per year &#8212; into the amount that it would equal today.  So, Darcy&#8217;s 10,000 pounds per year would be 6 million.  <\/p>\n<p>The possession or want of fortune plays such an important part in her novels.
