{"id":2100,"date":"2013-04-09T15:24:29","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T15:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.annbarlow.com\/?p=2100"},"modified":"2013-04-09T15:26:18","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T15:26:18","slug":"autism-repost-3-lumps-over-my-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.annbarlow.com\/?p=2100","title":{"rendered":"Autism Repost #3:  Lumps Over My Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is another repost for Autism Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, it was posted on August 21, 2006. \u00a0So, 7 years ago. \u00a0James was nine.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting note about his knowledge about body terminology &#8212; he still doesn&#8217;t know the common word for womens&#8217; breasts. \u00a0In the tenth grade&#8230;how many boys are like that? \u00a0The reason that I know is that he&#8217;s currently reading a book in English called, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Speak_(novel)\">Speak<\/a>. \u00a0He has to list and define words from the book that he doesn&#8217;t understand. \u00a0So, I saw that he had written &#8220;boob&#8221; as one of his words.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know how he defined it? \u00a0Boob &#8212; n. \u00a0a stupid person; fool; dunce.<\/p>\n<p>So, still not all that clear on terminology. \u00a0Oh, well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em>Lumps Over My Heart<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After dinner, we were out in the backyard. Jon was playing with #2 and #3, #4 was running around and I was sitting on the steps talking to James. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh, that boy. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He noticed the strap of my bra peeping out of my sleeveless shirt and an interesting conversation ensued.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>James (pointing) : What\u2019s this?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Me: Something I wear under my clothes. Women wear them.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>pause&#8230;..<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>James:Do you wear it for the lumps that you have over your heart?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lumps that I have over my heart?!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Bless him. He is slowly understanding his world. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So now, the dilemma. Where do I start informing this, basically, guile-less child without giving him lots of terminology that I\u2019m afraid that he would throw around without care for how it is received? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I have to think about this stuff. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Do I want him to know and use the word \u201cbreast\u201d? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No, I don\u2019t think that I do right now. Why? Because, this is the child who asks androgenous-looking people\u00a0what\u00a0they are. He asks old people if they are old and how their ears got so tall. He tells people that they are not skinny. He does none of this to hurt their feelings \u2014 but talking to people like this isn\u2019t good. But it would be so much worse if he asked someone how her breasts got so big, small, waistlength, fill in the blank. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, I think that we\u2019ll just leave it at \u201clumps over my heart\u201d. That\u2019ll hopefully be okay.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lumps over my heart. Lumps in my heart.
