Each day, now that school has begun, I drop off my youngest, 8-year-old Eli, first and then take the others. \u00a0He is also the first that I pick up from school at day’s end. \u00a0So we get a chance to chat on the way to get \u00a0the others. \u00a0Oh, the things he says. \u00a0He is an optimist and a dreamer and a schemer.<\/p>\n
For example, today he gets in the car…..<\/p>\n
Me: \u00a0Hi babe! \u00a0How was your day?<\/p>\n
Eli: \u00a0It was great!! I found an Indian arrowhead on the playground!!!<\/p>\n
Me: \u00a0Really? (I can’t turn around and look at the arrowhead at this point…so I just keep asking questions. \u00a0I’m thinking…well, we live in Oktibbeha county, so it’s possible.)<\/em> \u00a0Are you sure?<\/p>\n Eli: \u00a0(Enthusiastically)<\/em> Yes!! \u00a0It’s carved out of the kind of mineral that Indians used to use. \u00a0I had no idea that my playground was the site of an Indian battleground!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n Me: \u00a0Well, \u00a0I don’t know. \u00a0We’ll have to show Daddy when he gets home.<\/p>\n Uncharacteristic silence from the back seat….but he is not discouraged. \u00a0No, he is dreaming big…because next, he says…<\/em><\/p>\n Eli: \u00a0(Very excited whisper)<\/em> You know, I think that Squanto<\/a> carved this arrowhead.<\/strong><\/p>\n Me: \u00a0What? No, hon, I don’t think he was ever in Mississippi — he was the one who helped the Pilgrims.<\/p>\n (He is not to be deterred, no way.)<\/em><\/p>\n Eli: \u00a0Well, you know, \u00a0they were in tribes back then. \u00a0They moved around A LOT. \u00a0This arrowhead is so cool!!!
