J’s Take

Yesterday was an early dismissal day at school for 3 of my boys. Quick poll: What do we think of early dismissal days?

So, I dropped my oldest son off at school at his normal time for art class. Little did I know that the entire schedule of the school is different on early dismissal days. Each class only lasts 30 minutes instead of the usual length. His art class was over before I even dropped him off. But I didn’t know this, and so I left him at school and proceeded to the store to buy some coffee. Good thing I didn’t go on an errand that took me further away since the school called ten minutes later to tell me about my mix up. The whole time I was driving back, I was going over how J might have reacted to this change of schedule that I didn’t get a chance to prepare him for. I was hoping that he didn’t get upset or end up wandering around and getting lost.

He was waiting in the office for me when I got there. He was calm and I immediately was grateful that he seemed okay with everything.

After apologizing for the mix up, I asked him what he did when he realized that art was over. He began, mournfully, “Well, I was wandering, and feeling very lost and alone……I wondered if Art forgot that I was coming! But, then the kindly shop teacher saw me and told me where I should go.” He added, “And then I played Put On Your Sunday Clothes on my recorder to make me feel better.”

This boy. I could just see him walking back to the office blasting a show tune from Hello Dolly as a way to comfort himself.

And then I laughed.
